CPTCIO raised over £800,000 to restore the derelict 14th century pele tower and open it to visitors in July 2021. A beacon will be lit on the roof of the pele tower on the 2nd June at 9.45pm as part of the nationwide beacon lighting ceremony.
Pele towers were built as a defence against the notorious Border Reivers and beacons were lit on these towers whenever the Reivers were on the rampage. Our beacon lighting ceremony might therefore be the first time a beacon has been lit on the tower for over 500 years!
