Berwick Riders’ Association organise and promote the annual Riding of the Bounds, a 17-mile route ridden on horseback around the Liberties of Berwick. The event has taken place for almost 700 years and was originally a military function begun in the medieval wars between Scotland and England. It has been a civic responsibility since 1609 after the Union of the Crowns.
In the week of the ride, in April or May, we also have a Hobby Horse Walk around the Elizabethan walls of Berwick where local schools and youth groups make their own hobby horses and ride them around the walls whilst being led by pipes and drums. During Jubilee year in 2022 the children decorated their horses with special Platinum Jubilee rosettes, purchased with monies kindly provided by Northumberland Council Jubilee Fund and made by our rosette supplier. The children took them home as a keepsake to remember The Queen’s 70th Jubilee.
