Crowning King and Restoration: Charles II’s coronation, 1661
Online talk by Dr Neil Johnston, Head of Early Modern Records at The National Archives
Uncover the history of Charles II’s coronation. It was not just a lavish ceremony but also a deeply political event; it was a powerful moment for the king to demonstrate his authority.

This event is part of the Royalty on Record programme from The National Archives, celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee after 70 years on the throne. To mark this momentous occasion, The National Archives is digitising records from our collections about Her Majesty’s life, coronation and reign as well as revealing interesting and intriguing tales from royal history.
