Land of Oak & Iron covers 177 square miles of the beautiful and historic Derwent Valley & surrounding areas, making it one of the North East’s most rewarding & exciting areas to explore. Land of Oak & Iron was once a cradle of the Industrial Revolution, with a booming iron & steel industry. Nowadays, whilst industrial remains still scatter the landscape, nature has reclaimed the environment, creating a rich patchwork of woodlands, riverbanks & grasslands; attracting otters, deer & red kites.

At the heart of the Land of Oak & Iron is the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill – here you can head off on a walk, enjoy a variety of events, creative workshops, guided walks & talks, along with the local delights our café & shop have to offer.

We are excited to be part of the nation’s celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee between 2nd – 5th June and to be an official site for lighting one of the Platinum Jubilee Beacons on Thursday 2nd June too!

Throughout the celebration we will have family-friendly crafts, a Royal themed trail, live music and much more – check our social media pages for new announcements.

Our fabulous café will be serving delicious food including breakfasts, lunches, children’s lunch boxes, cakes, sweet treats and more -plenty of seating indoor and out.

You can also buy a picnic blanket from our locally sourced shop so you can be part of the Big Lunch in our lovely meadow area.

For the official Beacon lighting event on Thursday 2nd June, we will have a local choir singing, a Northumbrian piper and local musicians in the run up to local MP Liz Twist lighting the Beacon with a specially nominated person from the local community.

Lucca Pizza will be here all evening serving freshly prepared wood-fire pizza from their vintage trailer along with Scoops n Smiles serving delicious real dairy ice-cream from their pretty vintage van.

There’s something for everyone – so come and discover what makes the Derwent Valley the perfect destination.
